How can Anytime Pharmacy help me?

We provide this regulated, specialist service for people who have tested positive for gonorrhoea, patients who have a sexual partner who has gonorrhoea or people who recognise the symptoms of gonorrhoea after having had a previous episode in the past. If you are in any doubt have a postal test before requesting treatment.

All services provided by Anytime Pharmacy are confidential (we do not inform your GP) and allow you to get tested and treated within the privacy of your home and without the potential embarrassment of a face-to-face doctor consultation or the inconvenience of lengthy waiting rooms.

Choose same day click and collect from your local participating pharmacy. The benefit of collecting from your local pharmacy is that you can go to the pharmacy at a time that suits you, it's faster than a mail order delivery and no-one has to wait at home to sign for your medicine.

How does the Anytime Pharmacy service work?

Step 1: Register online and complete the free online medical questionnaire consultation. A GMC-registered doctor will review your questionnaire and, if it is safe to do so, approve you for treatment. You do not pay for your doctor consultation.

Step 2: If you are approved for treatment you will be sent a text message asking you to log back into your secure patient record. You can pay for your gonorrhoea treatment using a debit or credit card.

Step 3: You will be sent a FREE SMS (text message) when a doctor has sent your prescription to your nominated pharmacy. We advise you to call your nominated pharmacy to check your prescription is ready, then collect your medicine.

Why are no prices shown for Anytime Pharmacy treatment services?

Under current UK advertising law we cannot show you prescription-only-medicine (POM) prices prior to a medical consultation with a registered doctor. Once your doctor has approved you for treatment all prices are clearly displayed. Your registration and medical consultation is free and you are under no obligation to purchase any treatment.

All of our prices are fully inclusive, and so for prescription medicines the prices include the cost of the consultation, the issuing of a private prescription, and dispensing of the medicine itself. There are no hidden extras.

What are the potential side-effects (contraindications) of this gonorrhoea treatment?

All medication and antibiotics can cause side effects. Your gonorrhoea treatment can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or an allergic rash. The leaflet accompanying the treatment will list some of the rarer side-effects.

When answering your medical questionnaire for gonorrhoea treatment it is very important that you answer the questions truthfully to ensure your doctor has a full picture of your medical history before they prescribe you treatment.

How effective is this gonorrhoea treatment?

For uncomplicated gonorrhoea oral cefixime is very effective. Due to gonorrhoea drug resistance within the UK, six weeks after you have finished your course of treatment for gonorrhoea you must take a gonorrhoea test to check whether you still have gonorrhoea ("Test-of-Cure"). Testing prior to six weeks may give a false positive test result. A single intra-muscular injection of another antibiotic is now the first line treatment of gonorrhoea. To obtain the injection treatment please visit your local NHS (GUM) sexual health clinic.

Dual therapy for gonorrhoea and chlamydia infections:

Patients infected with gonorrhoea are frequently co-infected with chlamydia; this finding has led to the UK best practise recommendation that patients treated for gonorrhoea infection also be treated routinely for chlamydia. You will need to take both the gonorrhoea and chlamydia treatments together as instructed by your doctor.

Gonorrhoea treatment - unlicensed medication:

You should be aware that under the NHS, cefixime treatment for gonorrhoea is an unlicensed medication. Gonorrhoea can be resistant to the standard NHS treatment especially if the infection has been caught in south-east Asia or Africa. For this reason if your doctor thinks it is safe to do so they will prescribe cefixime.

Who should not use this particular gonorrhoea treatment service?

The one day gonorrhoea treatment service is not suitable for patients who are allergic to cefixime and azithromycin.
The seven day gonorrhoea treatment service is not suitable for patients who are allergic to cefixime and doxycycline.

You should not request this treatment service if you are pregnant, breast feeding or if you suffer from liver or kidney disease. If you fall into one of these categories, please attend your nearest GUM clinic or your GP for a face-to-face consultation.

Alternate treatment options

Gonorrhoea can also be treated by injecting antibiotics into a patient; this particular treatment service is not available via Anytime Pharmacy's online clinic.

How long must you wait after your gonorrhoea treatment to have sex?

You must not have unprotected sex for at least six weeks after you have finished your course of gonorrhoea treatment.
